REGION: Solar Company Bust Raises Questions

California’s solar “gold rush” — sped along by the U.S. Department of Interior’s fast-tracking — has experienced a crash in the Riverside County desert.

Solar Trust of America, a German company that was going to build one of the world’s largest solar power plants near Blythe, declared bankruptcy this week.

It owes about $1 million in rent to the government.

Solar Trust was granted the rights to use more than 7,000 acres of public land for a solar plant that was supposed to supply enough power for 300,000 homes.
