Two Massive Solar Farm Plans Submitted on Outskirts of Shepton Mallet

Two massive solar farm plans submitted on outskirts of Shepton Mallet
A SOLAR farm the size of 24 rugby pitches could be built on the outskirts of Shepton Mallet.

A planning application has been submitted to Mendip District Council to install solar panels on up to 28 hectares off Easton Lane, Pylle.

Pylle Solar, which has submitted the application, says that the solar farm could generate 13.5 MW of electricity – enough to power up to 3,300 homes. During periods of peak production, the site could generate enough electricity for more than 20,000 houses.

The design and layout of the solar farm also allows for the site to continue in agricultural use through grazing and also through limited silage production from the retained grassed areas. Parts of the site could be of archaeological value, and where necessary, there will be a minimal intrusive impact design.

An option to lease land for a solar farm at Lower Easton Farm was first taken out in 2010 by SunPower. The company held a public consultation in 2011, but did not apply for planning permission.

In early 2014, the rights to the site were bought by Pylle Solar, which has submitted the application.

The development would have an operational lifespan of 25 years. After this time, the solar farm would be removed and the land would go back to full agricultural use.

Plans have also been submitted to Mendip for a solar farm in North Wootton.

Company Good Energy wants to operate a 46.1 hectare farm at Worminster Down for a period of 30 years.

Sheep will be able to continue to graze the land around the solar panels.

Details of both applications can be found on Mendip’s website.
